Wissahickon Garden Club Album 1970-1982 |
Description |
This album is the fourth in a series of albums created by members of the Wissahickon Garden Club, with content from 1970-1982. Though the content is from the period stated on the front cover, it appears to have been inserted into the album at a much later date. On front cover, "WGC 1971-80" is stamped into faux leather surface. No content is glued into or written on the inside front cover of the album. The first page is unused. Photocopies of two articles published in undated issues of the Chestnut Hill Local are included on page 2. These include those with the headlines "Greene Countrie Garden Club Walks Away With the Top Prizes Mrs. Warwick Wins Redhouse Bowl," and "About Those Narcissi." The former discusses the winners of what appears to be the Chestnut Hill Flower Show. The article notes "One seven year old, Nat Caulk, still had some of his Christmas money and added to it by cleaning up his 'very messy playroom' (who said that?) to earn enough to buy his mother a flowering almond. Dud [Dudley] Warwick's fifth grade class at Chestnut Hill Academy earned $14 doing odd jobs at home to buy two trees which they gave to their school, and several children brought their mothers presents a week early. Dan Bavuso, lent his Arco garage at Evergreen and Germantown, to store the greenery overnight. It all took place at the tree and shrub booth of the Chestnut Hill Development Group, a new "development" of the Flower Show this year, and one that promises to be repeated. Two other plant booths did a big business despite cool weather, which was good for plants, if not for fingers and toes. According to Dolly Zepernick, who manned the tree booth and gave away flowers to commuters at early hours on Thursday and Friday mornings, life was made quite bearable by the Arnold Blocks who run the newsstand and fed her and her helpers hot coffee." The other article discussed Narcissi cultivation. Garden Club of America [GCA] bulletin content for September 1971 is mounted to page 3. It includes details about the 1971 Philadelphia Flower and Garden Show. Additional details on the 1971 Flower Show can be found towards the end of the previous album. The GCA content continues on page 4. Page 5 includes a copy of the 1971-1972 Wissahickon Garden Club [WGC] program, which includes a list of members of the 1971-1972 WGC. Also included is a program of the "Wissahickon Garden Club and Random Club Town and Country Autumn Show," held at the home of Mrs. Clifford C. R. Hood, 8201 St. Martin's Lane, October 19, 1971. A photocopy of a March 14, 1972, article by Joseph X. Dever [presumably of the Philadelphia Inquirer] is taped to page 6, with the headline "Ernesta Reigns at Flower Show," discussing the preview of the 1972 Flower Show, with photographs of Franklin C. Watkins and Mrs. John S. [Polly] Newbold. Also attached to page 6 is a program of the 1972 Philadelphia Flower and Garden Show. A photocopy of a single newspaper article is taped to page 7. Clipped from an unknown newspaper, it bears the headline "Mrs. Reath Wins Blue Ribbon for Plants." The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society ribbon was awarded to Mrs. J. Pancoast Reath, for her winning entry in the 1972 Flower Show's "Plants container grown." Photocopies of additional newspaper clippings are attached to pages 8 and 9, documenting other awards given at the 1972 Philadelphia Flower and Garden Show, including those awarded to Ernesta Ballard, Mrs. James C. Hornor, Mrs. E. Perit [Perot] Walker, Mrs. Edward R. Wood, Jr.; Mr. Horace C. Jones, Mrs. Charles E. Ingersoll, and Mrs. Horace C. Jones. A photocopy of a 1972 issue of the Chestnut Hill Local is attached to page 10, as are two color photographs. The article includes a photo with caption "The Mayor Gets a Badge. Mrs. Ernesta D. Ballard, of Chestnut Hill, director of the 1972 Flower and Garden Show, decorates Mayor Frank L. Rizzo after he planted the first acorn launching the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's 'Plant Your Own Tree' campaign. The button reads 'I Planted a Tree at the Flower Show..' The show, largest in the East, ran at the Civic Center last week." Two photographs appear to show entries in the 1972 Flower Show. A single large black and white photo is mounted to page 11. It shows a bouquet made of dried flowers. Called "Immortelle," the arrangement was entered into the 1972 Flower Show by Mrs. James C. Hornor. It won second prize. A handwritten list of what appear to be Wissahickon Garden Club member entries in the 1972 Flower Show includes those by Hunter, Stanley, Wood, E. Ballard, Walker, Ingersoll, Hornor, Jones, and Ashmead is taped to page 12. Written on lined paper. Banners and brief content clipped from the February and March issues of "PHS News" are taped to page 13. Content includes that announcing classes of instruction in making pressed flower pictures, taught by Mrs. James C. Hornor. Program content associated with the Garden Club of America's Zone V Meeting [May 10-11, 1972] in association with the Wissahickon Garden Club is included on page 14. Venues included the Schuylkill Valley Nature Center, the Morris Arboretum, and the Neighborhood Garden Association. A program of the Zone V Meeting is attached to page 15. Bright orange yarn is included and functions as a decoration of sorts; it is not clear as to whether this yarn originally came with the program, or it was added later. Four small photos a-d are attached to page 16. These appear to be candids and were perhaps taken at the 1972 Zone V Meeting, mentioned above. Written on the album page, in pen, are the names of those shown in the photos, including Mr. Dick James, Mr. Toby Pierce, Mrs. Drysdale [?], Mrs. Wood; the Mesdames D. Ashmead, Affel Jr., William Hancock, Ed Wood Jr., Peter Randall, Simonin, J. Stewart, H. Webster, J. Miller, Charles Meigs, A. Steel. Similar black and white photographs [5, a-e] are taped to page 17; these appear to be of members of the WGC's Rare Plant Committee. Those shown in the photographs include Mesdames Randall, A. Steel, J. Stewart, Mrs. Nelson Warwick, J. Clark. Several unidentified women are also shown. Five color photographs a-e are taped to page 18; these are candids of what appears to be a WGC trip to the Morris Arboretum. Nine color photographs [a-i] are taped/ glued to page 19. They show the gardens of [with addresses in brackets] Mrs. James C. Hornor [Grasshopper Lane, Gwynedd Valley], Mr. and Mrs. Frederic Ballard [9120 Crefeld Street] and Mr. and Mrs. Robert McLean [7311 Elbow Lane]. The photographs were taken in association with the 1972 Zone V meeting documented on previous pages in this album. Nine photographs [a-i] in three rows are taped/ glued to page 20. Those in the top two rows are in color, and those in the top row show the garden and hall of Mr. and Mrs. Horace C. Jones [8305 Seminole Avenue], and in the middle row, those of the garden of Mr. and Mrs. W. Beaumont Whitney [510 East Evergreen Avenue]. The bottom three were taken in black and white; that at the far left was taken of a display of flowers in a watering can on display at the Sunnybrook Golf Club; that in the middle was taken of Mrs. Clifford Fifield presenting the Horticulture Award to Mrs. James C. Hornor; that at right is of the Conservation Award being presented to Mrs. Richards, Mrs. Clark, and Mrs. Hornor. Nine photographs [a-i] are attached to page 21; the top three are in color, the remainder are in black and white. All were taken of Neighborhood Garden Association gardens and [vest] pocket parks in various neighborhoods of Philadelphia. According to a note written in pen on the page, one of the pocket parks was planted in the memory of Mrs. Alan Crawford. Unfortunately, the locations of the parks are unknown. A page from the 1971-1972 Pennsylvania Horticultural Society yearbook and a photocopy of an undated article published in the Chestnut Hill Local are taped to page 22. The yearbook page includes Mrs. James C. Hornor and Mrs. E. Perot Walker listed as PHS Executive Council members. The headline for the newspaper article reads "Weather Favors Garden Clubbers" and discusses the Zone V meeting documented in previous pages of this album. Six black and white photographs [a-f] are attached to page 23. Individuals are not identified in any of the photographs, which were taken at the home of Mrs. Evan Randolph in celebration of her 40th birthday, June 5, 1972. Randolph lived at 8711 Seminole Avenue. Six additional black and white photographs [a-f] of Mrs. Evan Randolph's birthday party are attached to page 24. A photocopy of a single undated newspaper article [perhaps from the Philadelphia Inquirer] is attached to page 25, with "At the Flower Show: Who Wins and What's to See: The Story of Bonsai." Bonsai plants were apparently associated with entries at the 1972 Philadelphia Flower and Garden Show. Numerous entries are listed below the main article, with some associated with the Wissahickon Garden Club. This article is continued on the next album page. Also included on page 26 is a photocopy of an article clipped from the pages of the March 16, 1972, Chestnut Hill Local, with the headline "Hill Gardeners Do Bloomin' Well at Flower Show." Entries associated with Wissahickon Garden Club members include those of Ernesta D. Ballard, Horace C. Jones, Duffield Ashmead IV. Six black and white photographs [a-f] are attached to page 27. None are labeled, but include the caption "Fall 1970 All Saints Hospital" written in pen at the top of the page. It is not clear as to what event is shown in the photos. Note that the year 1970 may have been written in error, as photos on the following two pages are of an event from fall 1971, and show the same formatting. Eleven black and photographs are attached to pages 28 and 29, with 6 on page 28 [a-f], and 5 on page 29 [a-e]. At the top of page 28, written in pen, is "Fall Flower Show 1971;" the contents of the photos consists of a series of bouquets. Pages 30, 31, and 32 include eight similar black and white photographs, but are formatted in 5 x 7" format, instead of 3.5 x 5" as shown on pages 28 and 29. Three photos [a-c] each are attached to pages 30 and 31; 2 [a-b] are attached to page 32. What appears to be a photo inventory of "Book V" is attached to page 33, and consists of an inventory written on pen, on lined paper. Years represented are 1974, 1976, and 1979. Those of 1979 include the note: "Susie Walker at Morris Arboretum with former Director Dr. John W. Fogg Jr. Susie Walker since she joined the Garden Club in 1964 has been a dominate figure in the civic and horticultural community. President of the Associates of the Morris Arboretum, in charge of All Saints hospital garden, recipient of the recently awarded Zone V Horticultural Award of the G. C. A. and many other honors." Page 34 includes a single large black and white photograph of a bouquet, with "Shore Line 2nd Prize Mrs. Wharton Bedelle 1974." A single large black and white photograph is attached to page 35, and shows an entry in the 1974 Philadelphia Flower Show. Below this is "Best Botanical Listing Philadelphia Flower Show 1974 2nd Prize Mrs. Browditch [Bowditch?] Ch." Page 36 includes a photograph published in an unknown newspaper, with the caption "Rainy reminiscences of his days as director of the Morris Arboretum, Chestnut Hill, were enjoyed at Friday ceremonies in his honor by Dr. John M. Fogg, Jr., with two old friends. Mrs. E. Perot Walker, center, Lafayette Hill, president of the Arboretum Associates, shares her umbrella with Mrs. Bertram L. O'Neill, Chestnut Hill, of the Arboretum's advisory board of managers." Above the caption, someone noted "1975" in pencil. This clipping is mounted to stiff card stock, which, in turn, is mounted to the page. Written at the top, in blue pen, is "Mrs. Bertram O'Neill- Mrs. E. Perot Walker Ceremony to honor Dr. John M. Fogg Jr. Morris Arboretum - All Saints Hospt. Zone V Hort Award 1979." This latter note conflicts in year with the "1975" written on the clipping; 1975 is more likely the correct year of the content. A single black and white photograph of a needlepoint work including the letters of the alphabet and "1973" at the base of a potted plant is attached to page 37, with the caption "Design for Needlework 1973 1st Prize Mrs. Hornor" written in pen at the top of the page. Presumably entered for competition in the 1973 Philadelphia Flower Show. Page 38 includes a single black and white photograph of what appears to be a watercolor, with the caption "2nd Prize Mrs. James C. Hornor Oriental Landscape Philadelphia Flower Show 1973." A photocopy of an undated newspaper article apparently published in the Philadelphia Bulletin is attached to page 39. It bears the headline "Making Pictures Out of Flowers: Patience Needed," and documents the work of Mrs. James Hornor, of Gwynedd Valley, involved in the creation of her art shown on previous pages. She was previously the curator of textiles at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A photocopy the article with the headline "Getting Ecology Message to Kids Goal of TREND" is attached to page 40. The article was published in the October 12, 1972, issue of the Chestnut Hill Local and discusses the importance of ecology classes at area schools. "TREND" is an acronym for "Teaching Response to Environmental Demands." Several Wissahickon Garden Club members were involved in the program, including Mrs. Duffield Ashmead and Mrs. Donald Scott. Page 41 includes the 1972-1973 Wissahickon Garden Club program, loosely taped over a list of flower arranging workshops. Pages 42 and 43 each include a single large photograph of a bouquet entered into competition at the 1973 Philadelphia Flower Show. That on page 42 was entered by Mrs. Horace C. Jones and won second prize; that on page 43 was entered by Mrs. Donald A. Scott and Mrs. Robert McLean III and won 3rd prize. A large black and white photograph of what appears to be a textile background with dried plant material is attached to page 44. Page 45 includes content associated with the 1973 and 1974 Philadelphia Flower and Garden shows. This includes a 1973 exhibitor's guide, information about the Garden Club of America's Flower Show Award, and information about the 1974 award, an image of which was published in an April 1974 issue of The Bulletin. The certificate shown was drawn by Mrs. James C. Hornor of the Wissahickon Garden Club. Wissahickon Garden Club bylaws and 1973-1974 program content is taped to page 46. Four undated "thank you" letters are attached to page 47. All were written to "Anne" and were written by Anne Greenough, Anne Wright of "Flyway" [526 Telner Street], Mrs. Peter Keating, and Jessie W. Disston. All were apparently given honorary memberships to the WGC. A 1974 Philadelphia Flower and Garden Show exhibitor's guide is taped to page 48. Page 49 includes an article clippeed from an unknown and undated newspaper, presumably documenting the entries and winners of the 1974 Flower Show. The article consists of three separate clippings glued to black construction paper, which was then taped to the album page. WGC members mentioned in the article include Mr. and Mrs. Beaumont Whitney, Mrs. Nathaniel R. Bowditch, Mrs. Robert McLean, Mrs. Edward F. R. Wood, Morris R. Brownell and Horace C. Jones, Ernesta D. and Frederick L. Ballard, Duffield Ashmead III and IV, Mrs. E. Perot Walker, and Mrs. Wharton Biddle. A photocopy of a single newspaper article clipped from an unknown newspaper dated Friday, April 19, 1974, bears the headline "Success Is A Natural For Mrs. Walker" and discusses Mrs. E. Perot Walker's suggestions for plant care. Includes a portrait photograph of Mrs. Perot, and one of her orchids. A medal and ribbon of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society awarded to the Wissahickon Garden Club at the 1974 Philadelphia Flower and Garden Show is attached to page 51. Behind this are two photocopies of content from the Chestnut Hill Local. At right is an undated photograph, with the caption "RIDING IN STYLE in a horse-drawn carriage up Germantown Ave. to Chestnut Hill Development Group's flower show in local shop windows on April 26 & 27 were carriage driver and assistant plus judges (third from left) Mrs. Henry King, Mrs. William Hancock, Mrs. Stanley Pearson, an unidentified store clerk, and Thomas Emmons, CHDG president and Frigate Book Shop captain." At left is a clipping from May 2, 1974, announcing winnters at the 1974 Flower Show, including Mrs. Morris Brownell and Lisa McLean. Two red second-prize ribbons and associated judges' cards are attached to page 52. These include one each from the 1974 and 1976 Philadelphia Flower and Garden Show. Note: both ribbons are glued to one of the cards; it is therefore impossible to tell which ribbon is associated with which card, as the cards are undated. A loose photocopy of a newspaper article is inserted between pages 52 and 53. It appears to have been clipped from an unknown issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer, and includes the headline "Enthusiastic Propagation Keeps Horticulturalist Busy," and features Elizabeth Susie Walker. Walker was acknowledged as "Citizen of the Week." See below. A photocopy of a newspaper article is attached to page 53, with a large photograph including the caption "TAKING SHAPE... inside 175-acre Morris Arboretum, which straddles the line between Philadelphia County and Springfield Township, is a new Cactus Garden. Specimens will be planted by the Cactus Society of Philadelphia against this rock garden backdrop of red stone from the Montgomeryville Quarry. Arboretum manager, Gorden Brandes, shows progress to Elizabeth Walker, president of the Morris Arboretum Associates (See related Citizen of the Week article on the editorial page.)." Page 54 includes an envelope labeled "Garden '73" containing three color slide transparencies, each showing a similar view of what was a WGC entry in the 1973 Garden Club of America annual meeting in Lake Placid, NY, showing closed shutters and adjacent plant. The entry was titled "Kitchen Bouquet" and won second prize, which was awarded to Mrs. Stanley Pearson, Jr. of the Wissahickon Garden Club. Page 55 includes a color photo of what appears to be a door decoration, as well as correspondence from Eloise Espy, Nationa Judging Chair of the Garden Club of America. In it, she notes "Congratulations- over 200 slides in all were submitted and yours was one in 29 to be selected- Furthermore, you were awarded 2nd prize- more congratulations." The content is from 1973 and appears to be associated with the slides attached to the previous page. Page 56 includes a copy of a speech by Ernesta D. Ballard, which was published in the proceedings of the 1972 New York Academy of Science Conference on Successful Women [the publication has come loose from the album page], and Garden Club of America content from 1973, discussing the Wissahickon Garden Club's content from that year's show. A copy of the Wissahickon Garden Club's 1974-1975 program is attached to page 57, as is a copy the program associated with "People Helping Plants Help People: A Horticultural Therapy Symposium" held by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society on September 16, 1974. At right, for their succulent plant arrangement, Messrs Duffiend Ashmead 3d and 4th, Chestnut Hill, also of the Wissahickon Garden Club, tied for third place with entries from members and The Country Gardeners." The article appears to continue on page 61, and was published in the Springfield Sun. Titled "Localites Corner Laurels," the article discusses winners of the 1974 or 1975 Philadelphia Flower and Garden Show. Another photo accompanied by the same caption as on page 60 is included. Page 62 includes a photocopy of an article published on the front page of the May 1, 1975, issue of the Chestnut Hill Local. A copy of the Wissahickon Garden Club's 1974-1975 program is attached to page 64. A copy of Morris Arboretum's September 1974 Bulletin is attached to page 65, with several articles about different aspects of botany and horticulture. No direct connection to the Wissahickon Garden Club is apparent. A copy of Morris Arboretum's March 1975 Bulletin is attached to page 66, with similar content as that included in the bulletin on page 65. No direct connection to the Wissahickon Garden Club is apparent. Page 67 includes photocopies of two newspaper articles about Ernesta D. Ballard. At top is that from the January 15, 1976, Chestnut Hill Local, with the article "Ernesta D. Ballard wins Gimbel Award." At bottom is her biography: "Ernesta D. Ballard, Gimbel Honoree, is Ardent Feminist." Articles include photographs of Ballard. Three Pennsylvania Horticultural Society text panels- presumably in association with the 1976 Philadelphia Flower Show- are attached to page 68. These are associated with Mrs. Stanley Pearson, Jr. and Mrs. Borie McAllister's entry in the "Win or Lose! Grand Prix" theme at the Flower Show, for which they won first prize. The content on page 69 is garbled. It consists of photocopies of several newspaper clippings published in the Chestnut Hill Local. One is dated April 5, 1979 and was published in the "See Saw" section announcing "Club Elects Helen Jones" [as vice president of the Garden Club of America]. Other articles are undated and include "Flower Show Is About To Blossom,' and "Flower Show" continued from page 10, the content of which is not represented on this page. Page 70 includes a list of "1976 Philadelphia Flower Show Awards." The last one on the list, number 12, is the Gold Medal Certificate of the Massachusetts Historical Society. This has been checked off. See page 71 for certificate... The Gold Medal Certificate of the Massachusetts Historical Society was awarded to the Wissahickon Garden Club for unknown entries in the 1976 Philadelphia Flower Show, as attached to page 71. Page 72 includes photocopies of two clippings- one from an unknown newspaper and the other, from "Focus on Living." The latter consists of a photograph with the caption "Mrs. Nathaniel Bowditch, left, Chestnut Hill, and Mrs. Charles Ingersoll, Penllyn, chairman of the Wissahickon Garden Club, sort out the plants that will comprise their "section of a garden depicting a Colonial theme." These appear to be candids of Wissahickon Garden Club members and include one with members posing with a cake, with "Good Luck Helen Susie Judy and Martha." The identities of the people in the photos are unknown. Miscellaneous content is attached to page 84. This includes a "Gold Medal" certificate awarded to the Wissahickon Garden Club by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society on March 14, 1980, for "...daily maintenance and condition of their garden." Below this is what appears to be a text panel and judge's comment associated with the WGC entry in the 1980 Philadelphia Flower Show. A third-place ribbon and Best Botanical Listing ribbon and medal awarded to the Wissahickon Garden Club at the 1980 Philadelphia Flower Show are attached to page 85. A series of four newspaper clippings are attached to page 86 and all are presumably clipped from the pages of the February 28, 1980 Chestnut HIll Local. Most include photos and associated captions. Those shown in the photographs include Joan Holmes, Sally Fernley, Ernesta D. Ballard, Mrs. Morris Merritt, Mrs. Duffield Ashmead III. Also mentioned are Elizabeth Walker, Deborah Dunham, Pater Peterson, Mary Schwartz, and Peggy Bowditch. A photocopy of a single newspaper article is attached to page 87, with the title "Wissahickon club excels in winning." Associated photographs include what appear to be entries in the 1980 Phiadelphia Flower Show, with content by Susie Walker, Helen Jones, Dottie Pearson, and Susie Stanley. A single large black and white photograph is taped to page 88, and includes the caption "Wissahickon Garden Club walked off with third place in the garden class, as you like it. Chairing the club's entry were Susie Walker of Lafayette Hill and Helen Jones of Chestnut Hill." Two large black and white photographs [a and b] of small potted plants on shelves in front of a window are taped to page 89. The associated entry won second prize in the 1980 Philadelphia Flower Show. Page 90 includes a single large black and white photograph of a bouquet of flowers entered in the 1980 Philadelphia Flower Show. The entry was by Mrs. Nicholas [Anne] Coste and was called "Profusion." It won first prize. Another large black and white photograph of a Wissahickon Garden Club entry in the 1980 Philadelphia Flower Show is attached to page 91. It shows a table setting with a bouquet and the entry, by Joly [?] Stewart, won honorable mention.
