Wissahickon Garden Club Album 1982 |
Description |
Wissahickon Garden Club Scrapbook/ Album 7 This album is the seventh in a series of albums created by members of the Wissahickon Garden Club [WGC], with content from 1982-1983. Though most of the content is from the period stated on the front cover, it appears to have been inserted into the album at a much later date. On front cover, "WGC 1982" is stamped into faux leather surface. "1982" is similarly stamped onto the spine. Note: a few documents were found loose inside the front cover, including a May 1982 newsletter of the Highlands Historical Society, and 1978 annual meeting notes of the Garden Club of America. These will be processed elsewhere in the Wissahickon Garden Club [WGC] Collection. Pages 1 and 2 are unused and are left blank. Page 3- A photocopy of a single [presumably 1982] newspaper article from the Philadelphia Inquirer is attached to page 3, with the headline "Perennial favorites with annual laurels at Flower Show." WGC winners at the 1982 Philadelphia Flower Show included Peggy Bowditch, Ginny Simonin, Joly Stewart, Suzie Walker, Helen Jones, Chris Drake, and Lisa Howe. Page 4 includes a single photocopied photo and caption published in the Philadelphia Inquirer, with the caption "Mrs. Nathaniel Bowditch grooms some liriope, a ground cover, at the Wissahickon Garden Club booth." Photocopies of two newspaper articles are glued to page 5. These include those with the headlines "Penn's Towne turns greene again" and "'Best-of-Week awards given at Flower Show." The articles document the WGC's involvement in the 1982 Philadelphia Flower Show and mention the Meadowbrook Farm Indoor Garden Trophy, Peggy Bowditch, Mary Schwartz, Virginia Simonin, Peggy Ashmead, Helen Jones, and Ernesta Ballard. A single large black and white photo is attached to page 6, and shows a bouquet/ arrangement. Below it, written on the album page in pen, is "Garden Club of America Certificate of Excellence for great distinction in the Artistic Section Med. Niche Buten Museum of Wedgwood 1st Blue Ribbon Mrs. Nicholas Coste." Two items are glue to page 7. These include "A Tribute to Six Ladies of Worth," with a poem made up of Latin names of various flora. At the bottom is an article clipped from the Chestnut Hill Local, with the headline "Former Hiller honored by Garden Club of America," at which Mrs. William Beaumont Whitney II was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by the GCA. Includes a photograph of Ms. Whitney. A single large black and white photograph is taped to page 8, and shows a bouquet of flowers. Written below the photo, on the album page, is "#109 Small Niche 1st Blue Ribbon Mrs. James M. Stewart." A single large black and white photograph is taped/ mounted to page 9. Written below it, on the album page, is "#107 Buten Museum of Wedgwood Challenge 1st Blue Ribbon Mrs. Robert Simonin." A small, lined piece of paper is attached below this, with the note "Garden Club Federation of Pa. for the highest scoring blue ribbon winner in the niche classes." An identical color photograph is also included. Page 10 includes a single large black and white photograph, with "#123 Mass arrangement of dried material miniature masterpiece 1st Blue Ribbon Mrs. Robert Simonin." An identical color photograph is attached to page 11. A large black and white photograph is attached to page 12. It shows a shelving unit with a series of plants on it. Page 13 includes a single large black and white photograph showing dried plant material sitting on a very small glass vase. Below, written on a section of notecard, is "#122A-D Miniature of dried plants 'Rhythm' 1st Blue Ribbon Mrs. Duffield Ashmead." Two photocopies of newspaper articles are attached to page 14. These consist of a photograph of a window box, with the caption "Peggy Bowditch of Chestnut Hill and Patter Peterson of Wyndmoor co-chaired an entry in the window box class and won honorable mention for their efforts. According to Peterson, they planted the box for a shady window and with the intent that it would be in full bloom by mid-summer. Included are ivy for winter interest, orange impatiens and blue browalia, "all very easy plants to obtain," says Peterson. Bowditch is a member of the Wissahickon Garden Club, and her friend belongs to the Garden Club of Philadelphia." The source for this photo and caption is unknown. Below this is an article, "Flower Show draws 170,000 through Friday," published in the March 13, 1983, Philadelphia Inquirer. Winners- including those from the Wissahickon Garden Club- are listed. Page 15 includes an invitation to the WGC's 1982 annual meeting, with a 50th anniversary champagne lunch. RSVPs were to be directed to Mrs. Willard Boothby, of 460 West Chestnut Hill Avenue. Below the invitation is what appears to be a photocopy of an incomplete newspaper article, with the title "some friends of flowers get a sneak preview." Taped over this is a photograph with caption "'SUNsational' was the comment of the judges for Annie Coste's blue-ribbon entry in the medium pedestal class of the same name. Favorite spring flowers such as tulips and roses explode in vibrant yellows, reds and oranges." Both appear to have originated from undated issues of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Page 16 includes photocopies of two photographs with captions, and a short newspaper article. One of the photographs was published in the March 10, 1983, Ambler Gazette, and includes the caption "Peggy Bowditch, of the Wissahickon Garden Club, won a blue ribbon for her weeping podocarpus plant which fellow horticulturalist Joanne Marano had given her as a birthday present a few years back." The second photograph includes the caption "A collection of seeds and p… form Small Wonder, the… arrangement by Virginia Simonin of Wyndmoor wh… won a blue ribbon in … miniature arrangement class." The newspaper article was published in the March 10, 1983, issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer, with the headline "Crowd mark set at flower show." A short list of awards is included below, which includes WGC member Anne Coste.
