Wissahickon Garden Club Album 1963-1976 |
Description |
This album is the third in a series of albums created by members of the Wissahickon Garden Club, with content from 1963-1976. Though most of the content is from the period stated on the front cover, it appears to have been inserted into the album at a much later date. On front cover, "1963 - 1971 Wissahickon Garden Club" is stamped into faux leather surface. No content is glued into or written on the inside front cover of the album. Tucked inside the front cover is what appears to be an index to the photographs included in this scrapbook. However, the photos listed in the index do not match up with those included in the scrapbook. A total of 11 photos are listed. Also included is a table/ speadsheet listing what appears to be 1969-1970 Wissahicon Garden Club cup/ trophy winners. These include Mrs. Edmond G. Thomas, Mrs. Morris H. Merritt, Mrs. Frederic L. Ballard Jr., Mrs. Elkins Wetherill, Mrs. James C. Hornor, and Mrs. Charles E. Ingersoll. Also includes strip of construction paper with "Philadelphia Flower Show 1963" written in pen, and a plant list, presumably associated with a WGC Philadelphia Flower Show entry. Pages 1 and 2 are unused. Page 3 includes content from the 1963 Philadelphia Flower Show, in which the WGC had an entry, in class 502. The WGC's entry won second prize. as documented by the two small exhibit panels present on the page. The theme was "garden in containers." Page 4 includes a large black and white photograph, presumably taken of a WGC entry. The photograph shows a small, rear garden with fence and ornamental plantings. Page 5 includes a large black and white photograph showing a flower arrangement entered in the 1963 Philadelphia Flower Show, class 510. According to notes written in pen on the scrapbook page, the entry was by Penny Ashmead and Gigi Boothby. Page 6 includes a single large black and white photo mounted to the page. This photo, taken by Edmund "Bud" Gilchrist of 8223 Seminole Avenue, Chestnut Hill, shows a bouquet as entered by the WGC for competition in the 1963 Philadelphia Flower Show. According to handwritten notes, the entry by Mrs. Helen [Horace] Jones won first prize. Photocopies of two articles are taped onto page 7. These include "Flower Show to Chase Winter Blues" and "Garden Group Names Secretary." In terms of the latter, the secretary in question is Mrs. Ernesta Drinker Ballard, of 149 Northwestern Avenue. She was apponted Secretary of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. As for the former, it offers behind-the-scenes glimpses into the making of the 1963 Philadelphia Flower Show, as told by Mrs. Stanley W. Pearson Jr., a photo of whom is included with the article. Page 8 includes several photocopies of newspaper articles and photographs with captions, undated and from unknown newspapers, but all presumably from 1963. Photographs include a window display by the Wissahickon Garden Club in a front window of Hill Hardware, 8615 Germantown Avenue, and of Mrs. Horace C. Jones of 8305 Seminole Avenue receiving a Philadelphia Flower Show award from Mrs. J. Pancoast Reath. Pages 9 through 12 include a series of letters and cards written in 1963 to "Dotty," Mrs. Stanley W. Pearson Jr. in thanks to their and the WGC's support of the Garden Club of America's 50th anniversary celebrations. Correspondence mailed to her include that from Nancy K. Belcher, Mrs. William Yohannan Sayad, Helen R. Canter[?], Martha B. Robinson, Angela W. Place, Elizabeth Rhoads Reynolds, Mrs. Rowland Robinson, Ann Sterling, Natalie P. Webster, Mrs. Frederick William Scott, Cordelia Thayer, Grace Hendrick Phillips [Chair of the National Parks Committee], and Gretchen Bryan. A single "Thank You" letter from the Pilgrimage Garden Club of Natchez, Mississippi is attached to page 13. Sent to Mrs. Francis Ballard from Ruch Audley Wheeler Beltzhooever, it notes "Mrs. William Kendall, Mrs. S. H. Lambdin and I congratulate your club most enthusiastically upon the success of the fiftieth anniversary of the Garden Club of America meeting in Philadelphia. It was indeed inspiring in every way." Etc. A large black and white photograph of a room setting is mounted onto page 14. The setting was entered by the WGC in the 1964 Philadelphia Flower Show, and the photograph bears the header "Section of a Room in a Society Hill Home." The entry was completed by Mrs. Boothby and Mrs. Crouter; it won second prize. The photo was taken by Edmund "Bud" Gilchrist of 8223 Seminole Avenue, Chestnut Hill. Oddly, an almost identical photograph is present on page 15, but the note written in the border claims the entry only won third prize. The only significant difference- a large white rug is not present in the page 15 photograph. The latter photograph was also taken by Gilchrist. Two items are mounted/ taped to page 16. These include a photocopy of a March 25, 1964 photograph with caption published in the Chestnut Hill Local. The caption notes "Mrs. William Hill Steeble of Highland Ave., Chariman of the Garden Club of America's Conservation Exhibit at the recent Philadelphia Flower Show receives the Bronze Medal of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society on behalf of GCA from Mr. George R. Clark of Flourtown. Mrs. Steeble is a member of the Wissahickon Garden Club." Below this is a card and third-prize ribbon awarded to the Wissahickon Garden Club for a WGC entry in the 1964 Chestnut Hill Flower Show. At the bottom of the associated card is "Display in Wister Shop Window," written in green pen. A certificate is mounted to page 17. It was awarded to the Wissahickon Garden Club by the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania, in honor of "25 Years Service in the Federation," dated September 1963. Photocopies of two articles/ written content are taped to page 18. These include a letter to the editor of the Chestnut Hill Local, written about the Wissahickon Garden Club by Mrs. Charles Angstadt of 139 West Highland Avenue, undated but circa 1964. The second consists of "Pressing and Framing Flowers," by Mrs. Edmond Thomas of the Wissahickon Garden Club. Attached to page 19 are photocopies of two articles from 1964 issues of the Chestnut Hill Local, and a color photograph. The articles include "Local Hardware Store Dramatizes Drought With Window Display," and "Chestnut Trees Are Prizes in CHCA Poster Contest." The hardware mentioned in the first article was the Hill Hardware store at 8615 Germantown Avenue. The color photograph includes a note written in the scrapbook, in pen, "Section of a Garden in the Cloisters of the Phila. Museum of Art. Done for the 50th Anniversary Meeting of the G.C.A. Mrs. Horace Jones - Chairman." Several items are taped to page 20. These include a 1965-1966 WGC list of programs, and a photocopy of part of a page from the March 11, 1965 Chestnut Hill Local, which includes details about "Operation Dogwood," including order form. Includes "Roll of Honor" list, which presumably includes those who had already purchased dogwood trees at the time of publication. A series of photocopies of articles and related content are attached to page 21, copied from 1965 issues of the Chestnut Hill Local. These include "Operation Cornus Florida," "What's in a Name?," "The Legend of the Dogwood," "Finis for Operation Dogwood," "Grounds Committee Holds Arbor Day Party." Page 22 includes photocopies of two articles, and a color photograph. The articles include "Local Garden Club Holds Flower Show in Hill Hospital," and "Operation Dogwood Nets $250 Sum, Given CHDG for Community." The former article is from the May 25, 1965 Chestnut Hill Local. The latter is undated, from an unknown newspaper but presumably also the Local. The color photograph shows Mrs. Ashmead and Mrs. Whitney in a parking lot, presumably fundraising in association with "Operation Dogwood." What appears to be the carriage house of the Jacob Ruth Funeral Home is visible behind them. A single large black and white photograph is mounted to page 23 and shows a bouquet was entered by Mrs. Minturn Wright into the 1965 Philadelphia Flower Show; the bouquet won second prize. Another large black and white photograph of a bouquet is mounted, to page 24. The bouquet entered by Mrs. Horace Jones into the 1965 Philadelphia Flower Show; the bouquet won second prize. A single black and white photograph is mounted to page 25. It shows "Section of a Room" entry in the 1965 Philadelphia Flower Show. This entry, by Mrs. McAllister, won first prize. Another large black and white photograph of a bouquet is mounted, to page 26. The bouquet entered by Mrs. Horace Jones into the 1965 Philadelphia Flower Show; the bouquet won third prize. A large black and white photograph of a bouquet is mounted, to page 27. This bouquet entered by Mrs. Willard Boothby into the 1965 Philadelphia Flower Show won second prize. Four black and white photographs are mounted to page 28 (photos a-d). These consists of candid shots of what appears to be a local flower show, perhaps the Chestnut Hill Flower Show. Undated but circa 1965. The people visible in the photographs are unidentified. Notes on the reverse of the photographs suggest they were taken for publication in the Chestnut Hill Local. Page 29 includes two color photographs (a-b) taken in the spring of 1965 of "Operation Dogwood" show Mmes. Ashmead, Crouter, and Whitney fundraising in what appears to be one of the Chestnut Hill Parking Company [later Parking Foundation] parking lots. The photographs were apparently published in the June 24, 1965 Chestnut Hill Local. Page 30 includes an article published in The Bulletin shows Mrs. James C. Hornor of the Wissahickon Garden Club, and her entry in the "Plant for Terrace Decoration" class at the 1965 Philadelphia Flower Show. Six black and white photographs (a-f) are attached to page 31; these show floral displays at Chestnut Hill Hospital, spring 1965. Note: only photos a and b were scanned individually, as the others could not be safely removed from the album for scanning. Photocopies of two newspaper clippings are attached to page 32. These include "Garden group forms" and "Pennsy's Hill Station Has New Green Aspect for Local Commuters." The former article announces the establishment of a Philadelphia Committee of the Garden Club of America; the latter article discusses the Wissahickon Garden Club's tending of the parcel of land behind the Atlantic gas station [now the site of TD Bank], and of the cleaning and planting of the railroad embankment on the inbound side of the tracks. Both articles are apparently from the June 17, 1965 issue of the Chestnut Hill Local. Photocopies of two October 1965 articles from the Chestnut Hill Local are taped to page 33. These include "Conservation in an Urban Area CHCA Theme for WVWA Fair" and "Two Peeks Over Local Garden Walls." The former includes a photograph with the caption "Mrs. E. Perot Walker, Chairman of CHCA's Conservation Committee, checks display she set up for CHCA representation in the Conservation Fair held Saturday in Fort Washington." Behind her is her display included at the Fair. The latter article features a discussion of several notable Chestnut Hill gardens, including those of Mrs. Charles Platt and Mr. and Mrs. W. Beaumont Whitney. A single large black and white photograph is mounted onto page 34. It shows a 1966 Philadelphia Flower Show entry consisting of a gravel walkway and terrace with low brick walls and ornamental plantings. A first-place ribbon is included with the photo. At the top is what appears to be written "First Prize - Mass Horticultural Society Design this [illegible] Chairman Mrs. Wright (Spiller). See page 36 for associated certificate. A Wissahickon Garden Club 1966-1967 program is taped to page 35. A certificate is mount to page 36. The certificate was awarded to the Wissahickon Garden Club for its "Section of a colorful garden including water as part of the design," entered in the 1966 Philadelphia Flower Show. For a photograph of the entry, see page 34. Page 37 includes two exhibition cards/ text panels associated with the 1966 Flower Show's "Section of a colorful garden" content, and a color photo of the Wissahickon Garden Club's entry. This is the first/ earliest color photograph of a WGC entry at the Philadelphia Flower Show included in this series of scrapbooks. Page 38 includes a single black and white photograph mounted to the page, showing the WGC's "Section of a colorful garden" shown in the greater context of the 1966 Philadelphia Flower Show. The show appears to have not yet opened, with judges on the floor reviewing the entries. A single black and white photograph is attached to page 39, showing a bouquet of flowers entered in the 1967 Philadelphia Flower Show. The entry, by Mrs. Horace Jones, won third prize. Page 40 includes a single black and white photo mounted to the page. Beneath this is the caption "Presentation by Mrs. Ballard to Mrs. Strong for Mrs. Wright." Though undated, the ribbon pinned to Mrs. Ballard's jacket is legible and clearly states "1966." The photo was therefore taken at the 1966 Philadelphia Flower Show, with the certificate shown in the photograph likely that included on page 36. Photocopies of several newspaper clippings and two color photographs are attached to page 41. The articles bear the headlines "Horticulture Society Names 1966 Winners" and "Lady Bird to See Instant Garden." The former article includes a list of 1966 winners, which apparently include those from the WGC. The St. Martins Station [Grounds] Committee was also a winner. The latter article features a visit by Lady Bird Johnson to the "instant garden" located behind the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's headquarters at 325 Walnut Street and includes a photo of Mrs. Beaumont Whitney and Mrs. Wyllys Terry, Jr. readying the garden for Ms. Johnson's visit in 1967. The two photographs attached are of the Joint Flower Show with the planters at Strawberry Mansion in 1966 or 1967. Photocopies of two newspaper articles are attached to page 42. These include those with the headlines "Floral Offerings," and "Wissahickon Entry Wins Honors at Flower Show" and appear to have been clipped from pages of 1967 issues of The Bulletin. The contents of the first article include a discussion of members of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and their work in decoupage. That of the second article featured a discussion of the Wissahickon Garden Club's entry "Tailor of Gloucester," which the WGC entered into the "Child's World" division of the 1967 Philadelphia Flower Show. The entry won first prize. The 1967-1968 Wissahickon Garden Club program is taped to page 43. Page 44 features a single, large black and white photograph, of a hanging basket at the 1967 Philadelphia Flower Show. Entered by Mrs. Ingersoll, the basket won first prize. A photocopy of a single newspaper clipping is attached to page 45. It shows two women and includes the incomplete caption "Mrs. Alfred Steel (left), of Chestnut Hill, and Mrs. Coleman attend the Spring Flower Show meeting, where garden club members went over the ground rules for..." Beneath this, "Colorful city backyard" is written in pen. Page 46 features a single large black and white photograph of a bouquet of flowers on a pedestal, apparently entered into the 1967 Philadelphia Flower Show by Mrs. Minturn Wright. The photo was that of Edmund B. "Bud" Gilchrist, of 8223 Seminole Avenue, Chestnut Hill. Page 47 features two photos- one color (a), and one in black and white (b)- of "A Child's World" entered into the 1967 Philadelphia Flower Show, by Mrs. Beaumont Whitney. The scene/ entry won first prize. Pages 48 and 49 feature two large black and white photographs of bouquets, one each entered by Mrs. Horace Jones (second prize, page 48) and Mrs. Henry Crouter (first prize, page 49). A certificate is mounted onto page 50. It was award to the Wissahickon Garden Club by the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania District 1, for "Civic Planting and Maintenance of Railroad Station," March 30, 1967. The "railroad station" referenced is Chestnut Hill station of the Pennsylvania Railroad, now SEPTA's Chestnut Hill West line. Page 51 includes a large black and white photograph of an entry in the 1968 Philadelphia Flower Show. The entry won first prize and was awarded the Gold Medal by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, for what appears to be a garden setting outside a "townhouse." First-place ribbon is included. Page 52 includes content from the 1968 Philadelphia Flower Show, including a certificate from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society awarded to the Wissahickon Garden Club, for its "Colorful Backyard Garden, Spring Flower Show," apparently in connection with that shown in the photograph on page 51. Includes judge's comments. Four color photographs are glued to page 53. These include photos [top left and middle] from the Garden Club of Philadelphia, and those of the Wissahickon Garden Club [bottom and top right]. Both show a similar setting of a townhouse garden, similar to that shown on page 51 and presumably from 1968 flower shows. Note: These photos (a-d) were not scanned individually, as they could not be safely removed from the album for scanning. Page 54 includes a photocopy of a 1967 brochure, "Christmas in Miniature," presented by the Exhibitions' Committee [presumably of the Wissahickon Garden Club], including works executed by Mr. and Mrs. W. Beaumont Whitney, Mrs. J. Rutherford McAllister, Mrs. Stanley W. Pearson, Mrs. John R. Clark, Mrs. Eleanor David, and Mrs. T. Bromley Flood. A single black and white photograph is mounted to page 55, and shows a setting of flowers and columns. The content was entered into the 1968 Philadelphia Flower Show by Mrs. Ashmead and Mrs. Hornor; it won second prize. Photocopies of three 1968 obituaries published in the Philadelphia Inquirer and Evening Bulletin are taped to page 56. These include two of Idella McCurdy, and one of Mrs. Randall Chase. Mrs Idella McCurdy is Mrs. J. Aubrey McCurdy, nee Idella Louise Gribbel. A photocopy of "'Colonial Architecture': New Look at History" as published in the June 11, 1968, Times Chronicle, is taped to page 57. References Mrs. E. Perot Walker, a member of the WGC. A photocopy of a photo montage originally published in the May 31, 1968 Chestnut Hill Local is taped to page 58. It shows various programs, tables, etc. including those of the WGC at an unknown event in Chestnut Hill. A photocopy of an article from an unknown and undated newspaper is taped to page 59, and shows a gazebo and recreated Colonial garden next to the headquarters of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, at 325 Walnut Street, Philadelphia. An expanded, more complete version is taped to page 60, from the July 10, 1968 issue of the Montgomery Post. Page 61 includes the 1969-1970 Wissahickon Garden Club program. Page 62 includes a large black and white photograph taken by Edmund B. Gilchrist, Jr. in March 1969, of what appears to be a brooch or miniature entered into the 1969 Flower Show by Mrs. James. Hornor. The entry won second prize. Pages 63-65 include similar entries by Mrs. McAllister/ Mrs. Pearson, Mrs. Willard S. Boothby, and another by Mrs. James C. Hornor. That by Mrs. Boothby won first prize. A large black and white photo is mounted to page 66, showing Vivian Ingersoll at the 1969 Philadelphia Flower Show, with her entry [winning first prize] shown on page 67. A single large black and white photograph is mounted onto page 68; this shows what appears to be a pressed "necklace" made from dried botanical material, and below it, information "from a mountain meadow." This entry by Mrs. Edmond G. Thomas won first prize in the 1969 Philadelphia Flower Show. Page 69 includes a photocopy an article from the April 17, 1969, issue of the Chestnut Hill Local, with a photograph of Mrs. Stanley Pearson and Mrs. Horace Jones, with students from the Springside School including Sharon Ashenfelter. Below this, two "thank you" letters are included, by "Sharon" and Ellen." That by "Sharon" is presumably that of Sharon Ashenfelter. "Ellen's" last name is unknown. Pages 70, 71, and 72 include additional letters written to Mrs. Horace Jones et al in April, 1969, and include those from Beth Strawbridge, "Mary," Beth Blough, Polly Wood, and Elizabeth Hughes. A typed 1969 letter from Mrs. Horace L. Witman of Springside Lower School to Mrs. Horace Jones is also included on page 72. In it, Witman thanks Jones for her demonstration for the school children. Note: Mrs. Horace Jones was living at 8305 Seminole Avenue at the time. A poem, "Greetings," is attached to page 73. Its author or significance are unknown. A typed class schedule is taped to page 74. In it are classes taught by Ernesta Ballard and Mrs. James C. Hornor. A photocopy of a newspaper article from an undated issue of the New York Times is taped to page 75, bearing the headline "11 RECEIVE AWARDS FROM GARDEN CLUB." Adjacent to this is a handwritten letter from "E." to "Helen", sent from 9120 Crefeld Street in Chestnut Hill, thanking "Helen" for her help in receiving the Distinguished Service Medal. "E." would later prove to be Ernesta Ballard, as informed by the following page. Page 76 includes what appears to be a page from a program, with "The Distinguished Service Award To Ernesta Drinker Ballard." Includes a photograph of Ballard, who was a member of the Wissahickon Garden Club. Also includes three color photographs (a-c) taken at the home of Mrs. Evan Randolph, November 3, 1969. The exhibit was mounted for the holidays at the Chestnut HIll Community Centre, and was sponsored by the Wissahickon Garden Club. Below this is a photocopy of a photograph, presumably published in association with the above article, with the caption "This exquisite dining room is a tiny Tom Thumb, right down to the Grandma Moses on the wall. It is the work of Mrs. John R. Clark and is part of the Mini House Tour to be seen at the Community Centre, 8419 Germantown Avenue from Friday, December 12 through December 20th. The tour is a project of the Wissahickon Garden Club which will use the proceeds for civic projects. A series of ten small color photographs are mounted to pages 78 and 79. These are associated with a "Joint Meeting and Flower Show with Garden Club of Philadelphia" October 20, 1969.
