Program for the Philadelphia Horse Show held along Willow Grove Ave. beside the Wissahickon Inn/Chestnut Hill Academy. Later the location of this show was moved and became the Devon Horse Show. A photo on the fourth page shows the "Grounds of the Philadelphia Horse Show Association" with a large, roofed, open-air grandstand and a building which may or may not have been part of the Philaldephia Cricket Club. This is the same image as in the 1896 catalogue with the addition of a signature"Schreiber 1895" in the lower left corner. Another photo with "Schreiber '96 shows a class with horses in hand. Several thatched huts are visible as well apart of the building shown in the other photo. Three photos on the last pages show carriage classes. Many ads of Phila. businesses are in the program as well as a listing of the classes, judges, horses and exhibitors. Some hand-written notations in pencil.
The three programs are from the Samuel F. Houston Papers, according to the donor. As a new widower in 1896, Samuel Houston, while continuing as a Director of the Phila. Horse Show Assoc., did not show himself this year, but his nephew Charles W. Henry and sister-in-law Margaret Longstreth Corlies did. 1997 and 1899 weere also quiet years for SFH.
The cover and first several pages are detached from the programs, binding cover missing.
